Music has always been and continues to be the universal language of mankind. To what extent do you agree or disagree

In contemporary world, a widespread metaphor is that music can be seen as the worldwide universal language, since a lot of people believe that individuals speaking different languages can gain the same understanding and feeling from listening to the same piece of music. In my opinion, as a language, it should be able to convey more complex information rather than merely expressing simple moods.

Primarily, without any doubt, while being immersed in some certain melodies, humans can naturally feel the similar emotion. For example, party music can easily cheer people up, and the music from horror movies from whichever country can readily make film audience terrified. In fact, this is nothing with the information that music can present, and it is just humans’ instinct. An instance in point is that most people without sufficient musical knowledge can not understand what classical piano pieces want to express, and to understand a folk song that was popular over 2,000 years ago in Han Dynasty of my country, historians need to do related research for years.

On top of that, what tunes can express is obviously limited, and probably that is why in most cases tunes are with lyrics. This makes songs far more difficult to comprehend for people in different cultural backgrounds. Music fans have to understand the language used by lyricists so as to know whether this song extols love or expresses sorrow. An interesting example is that I have heard a song called“Lemon Tree” since I began to learn English around 10 years ago,and until now I do not know why this singer liked a tree that sincerely. I certainly know its lyrics word by word, but without adequate cultural study, this song is just a cheerful tune for me.

In conclusion, music is widely thought to be a lot more than tunes, and it is universally known as the symbol of a region’s culture. Therefore, for understanding the in-depth meaning of a piece of music people need to learn about much knowledge in many aspects. Only in this way, can what musicians indeed want to express be received by all listeners. Thus, it is obviously not the “language” that all humans can understand with ease.

Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree?C14T3

Someworld-renowned musicians assert that there is no one who dislikes music, and if there is he or she just has not found the right type of music. In this context, music is often regarded as a social lubricant, especially among people with various cultural backgrounds or in diverse age groups. Personally, it bridges the cultural gap but not the age gap.

On one hand, light music in many occasions can be used for icebreaking, for instance, at a welcome party for new students from all over the world. Admittedly, this kind of music can easily make those new comersrelax, get rid of nervousness, and begin to talk with someone they did not know before. This can be attributed to the charm of music, which is worldwide compared to a cross-cultural language. No matter where people are from or who they are, they usually have the same understanding to some certain songs and tunes.

On the other hand, while hanging out with people in different ages, people sometimes hope music can serve the same purpose, whereas under this circumstance it is no longer the versatile antidote. Taking a family party as example, the moment young generations play some hip-hop music, the atmosphere is foiled and the elderly will immediately call a taxi. This is simply because older people are unable to understand why contemporary youth are fond of this kind of“noise”. Similarly, old people’s taste of music is definitely not what the young can accept.

In a word, without any doubt, music is cross-cultural, cross-linguistic,and cross-sex, and accordingly it can be largely conducive to socializing with people of different cultural backgrounds.Nevertheless, it does not function well to people with difference inage mainly because the musical taste changes dramatically with aging.
