　　Living in lockdown has led many people to undertake some self-improvement.Alongside baking or cramped（狭窄的）fitness regimes（n.养生法，体制）,some have chosen intellectual projects—such as picking up or mastering a foreign language.

　　这段话的意思是：隔离在家让许多人开始进行自我提升。除了烘焙或居家健身计划外，一些人选择了学习项目——比如学习或掌握一门外语。其中可以运用到写作的词汇是：

　　-undertake v.从事，那从事一些自我提高的事情，就是undertake some self-improvement;

　　-pick up or master a foreign language掌握一门语言

　　-alongside prep.与...同时；在旁边

　　Alongside baking or cramped（狭窄的）fitness regimes（n.养生法，体制）,some have chosen intellectual projects.

　　我们可以从这句话中提炼出一个句式，Alongside+doing sth,some+V原型，表示是一些人....而有些人....,是不是可以换成大家很熟悉的句型：Some people...,while others......

　　One summer many years ago,as he spent many hours driving alone to work,

　　your columnist（专栏作家，这里指的就是作者）learned French with the help of an ancient course developed to train American diplomats（外交官）.Not only were its text basic and cassettes low-tech;it was also low-concept.Exercises seemed to have much more repetition than was necessary:Mon frère va bien.Mon père va bien.Mon fils va bien.Mon ami va bien,murmured the tape,with pauses for repetition.(My brother is doing well.My father is doing well…)

　　这段话的意思是：很多年前的一个夏天，当时本刊专栏作家还需要花很多时间独自开车去上班，他参加了一门课程，学会了法语，该课程是为培训美国外交官而开设。课本很简单，磁带的技术含量也很低；课程概念设置不高。练习中，不必要的重复也很多：磁带有间隔地重复着。（哥哥很好。我父亲很好……）

　　其中，low-tech就是技术含量低，国内近几年一直用“low”表达东西比较次，但是low这个单词不能表达贬义的意思，注意low-concept，是概念比较基础的意思。

　　That primitive（原始的）method has since been replaced by whizzy（技术先进的）programmes promising easier progress.

　　从那以后，这种老方法就被承诺更容易取得进展的新奇项目所取代。

　　In the end,though,language is a skill more than（不只是，不仅仅是）a body of knowledge,acquired not so much by learning as by doing.

　　然而，说到底，语言与其说是一种知识体系，不如说是一种技能，与其说是通过学习获得，不如说是通过实践习得。

　　在这里，body有尸体的意思，a body of表示大量的，注意后面加不可数名词；学习知识的固定搭配是acquire/get/gain knowledge，不要用learn哦~

　　Put another way,learning a language with an app is a bit like getting fit with one.The device can guide you,but you still have to work.

　　换句话说，用一款应用学习一门语言有点像是用应用去健身。这个应用可以指导你，但你仍然要努力。

　　-put another way可以跟in other words替换使用，下次写作文的时候可以用这个短语，换个句式再去解释之前所说句子的意思。

　　其实这句话也能看出作者的用心，比如大家用健身APP去锻炼，关键还是得“动”，语言的学习也是一样，还是得多多实践练习呀~~

　　在最后，抛出作者的鸡汤：

　　There is no way to learn a language without time and effort.What technology does is make that effort pay off（有回报）faster.

　　没有时间和精力的付出，就无法掌握一门语言。技术的作用是使这种付出更快得到回报。
